What to major in medical school

The most important thing to know about what courses to major in prior to applying to medical school is that you need not be a pre-med major student. While you can expect your undergraduate degree and coursework to be seriously evaluated by the medical school admissions committees, it’s essential that you meet their basic educational requirements. Here are the core courses to take in preparation for medical school, in no priority order:

  • Anatomy
  • Biology (with laboratory course work for one year)
  • Biochemistry
  • Calculus
  • English (one year)
  • Inorganic Chemistry (with laboratory course work for one year)
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Physics (one year)

While a pre-med degree is not required to gain admission to medical school, your undergraduate transcript should clearly indicate you have completed many science classes, some math and a few English classes. You don’t need to have majored in science; however, you’ll find it easier to meet the essential requirements for admission to medical school as a science major. Your undergraduate science courses are the key ingredient in the medical school admissions process.
